SABBATH DAY OBSERVANCE

Sir, —A short time ago someone wrote you about backyard fires and noises on the Sabbath Day. For years in our neighbourhood we have had plumbing, sawing, and hammering every Sunday. The climax came on Easter Sunday, above all. Saws and hammers were going all out; one gets no peace at all. Then a terrific bonfire started and 11 or 12 houses in the street were obliterated by a dense smoke. We all expected all the fire brigades to come out. After all that subsided, out came a raucous lawnmower, so we all had a happy Easter Sunday. Even baby got no sleep. Why are some people so selfish?— Yours, etc., DO UNTO OTHERS. July 21, 1954.
