SHEEP AND SHEARING
Sir, —On a farm with which I am well acquainted, the system of early shearing has been carried on since 1944. A record of the temperature of all the southerly busters was kept for a period of 18 months, and it was found to average 45 degrees regularly. Surely- “The Mills of God Grind Slowly, But—” will agree that sheep shorn and turned out into blazing December sun will feel the south-west wind more keenly than those shorn in mild spring weather, when the extremes of temperature are not so far apart. Sheep with sunburn in December have all my sympathy, as they cannot use oil, as do the human sheep on Brighton beach on summer holidays.— Yours, etc., BLOTCHES. July 21, 954.
