OBITUARY

MR ALFRED LOUISSON Mr Alfred Louisson, a businessman and sportsman, died in Christchurch on Tuesday, aged 87. Mr Louisson came to New Zealand from England with his father, Mr Cecil Louisson. about 80 years ago. For about 50 years he was associated with the importing and merchant firm of Fairbairn, Wright and Company. From 1937 until his death he was governing director of the firm. A member of the Canterbury Jockey Club, Mr Louisson owned a stud farm at Ladbrooks, and raced several successful horses. By far the best horse he raced was Nightmarch, winner of the 1929 Melbourne Cup, 1930 New Zealand Cup, New Zealand Derby, A.J.C. Epsom Handicap, and over £32,000 in stakes. Mr Louisson purchased Nightmarch from the breeder, Mr G. A. Kain, after the horse had won twice and been twice placed as a two-year-old. After his brilliant race career Nightmarch, which is still alive, did good service at the stud for Mr Louisson, and was sixth on the winning sires’ list in 1940-41. Nightmarch’s daughters have proved good brood mares, and their progeny include Beaumaris, Vigilantia, Leibestraum and other good winners. Variant, which raced in Mr Louisson’s interest in the mid-1930’5, won the New Zealand Oaks. In recent years, Magical proved a good juvenile winner for him. In 1907 Mr Louisson was a member of a New Zealand bowls team that toured England.
