PENSION RATES IN BRITAIN

INCREASE PROMISED BY GOVERNMENT LONDON, July 20. A firm promise to improve rates of pensions and national insurance benefits as soon as the current review of the problem is complete has been given by the British Government. It was contained in an amendment to ■ Labour motion on old-age pensions to be debated in the House of Commons tomorrow. Signatories to the amendment include Sir Wington Churchill and Mr R. A. Butler, Chancellor of the Exchequer. It reads: “This House, while taking note of the action of the Government in 1952 in increasing pensions and national insurance benefits and of its success in stabilising the cost of living since that date, pledges its suoport for further improvement as soon as the current review of all financial and other problems involved has been completed.” This amendment is a reply to a Labour motion tabled last week which expressed “deep concern” at the failure of the Government to increase pensions, and called for early action to raise them.
