WELFARE OF OLD PEOPLE

SUGGESTED STRIKING OF RATE LYTTELTON COUNCILLORS’ OPPOSITION A request that all local bodies in the Christchurch area be asked to strike a rate to assist the Aged People’s Welfare Council was received at a meeting of the Lyttelton Borough Council from the chairman of the executive of the Welfare Council (Dr. H. R. Donald). A letter was also received from the Waimairi County Council suggesting that a meeting of representatives of the local bodies concerned be held in the County Council’s office on July 28. He was of the opinion that the cost of financing the Aged People’s Welfare Council should not be a burden on the ratepayers, said the Mayor (Mr F. G. Briggs). It should be a charge on the Social Security Fund. Cr. A. M. Miller said it had been claimed that there was a surplus in the Social Security Fund, and some of this should be used, he said. Cr. Miller’s motion that the Aged People’s Welfare Council be informed that the council opposed the proposal to strike a rate was carried.

CITY COUNCIL’S VIEW REPRESENTATIVES chosen to attend' conference Crs. E. A. Adams and C. Baldwin have been appointed by the Christchurch City Council to attend a conference of local authorities to discuss the advisability of levying an annual charge to assist the finances of the Aged People’s Welfare Council. The Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.) said that no local body could impose a rate on territory outside its jurisdiction.•
