MAORI CONCERT PARTY
WELL-BALANCED PROGRAMME A natural blending of serious, witty, and slap-stick items comprised the programme of the Te Awapuni Maori Concert Party at the Civic Theatre on Monday evening. The audience- was thoroughly entertained and joined in the traditional finale of “Now is the Hour.” The first half of the programme was made up of “European” items, with popular songs and instrumental items mixed in with comic acts and humorous skits. Isobel Whatarau, the women’s lead, and Howard Morrison, compere, singer, and general life-giver in most items, were the only members of the cast to stand out of a pleasantly confusing mixture. The second half of the programme was a concert on its own, and was made up of the Maori numbers proper. The choir again demonstrated that quality of Maori singing that enables it to sound rich and full with no accompanist, and even in the action songs the guitar seemed foreign and unnecessary. Some of the action songs were to popular tunes, and were doubly pleasing with their sober interpretation.
