GOLDEN TAN FOR RICCARTON

CHAMPION TO ACCOMPANY KINGS’ FAIR “The Press” Special Service PALMERSTON NORTH, July 20. The Awapuni trainer, A. H. Christmas, announced this morning that he would take King’s Fair and the champion Golden Tan south next Monday to race at the Grand National meeting. King’s Fair will race first in the Brabazon Handicap at the Christchurch Hunt Club’s meeting. He has not missed any work since he last raced, and requires only a couple of smart gallops to tune him up. C. McDonald, of Riccarton, was mentioned as his jockey. Golden Tan, on the other hand, is carrying plenty of condition—a little too much, in fact. He will race in the sprints at the Grand National meeting. Of course he will have a heavy weight to carry, but his trainer says he has no option but to race him. He looks in excellent health. This morning, the pair ran five furlongs on a very heavy track in lmin Bsec, the last three in 41 sec. The Wellington Steeplechase winner Lay Off wall leave for the south on Monday. He will compete in the Homeby Steeplechase before tackling the National, and B. J. Langford wil again be his jockey. Look Ahead will also go to Riccarton, where he is engaged in the minor jumping events. A further batch to leave in the next week wil comprise Curzon, Berne, Puketoi, Kettledrum, Kalonzo, Solar Mist, Golden Coronach, Canadian, Bowater, Ivnahoe and Sasin. J. W. Harris will ride Canadian and Bowater and J. P. Carter will be on Count Minerva and Solar Mist.

I. J. TUCKER RETURNS TO TAKANINI

“The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND, July 20. The Takanini trainer, I. J. Tucker who prepared Paper Strip and Rising Fast for second and third in the Doomben Cup last Saturday, returned to New Zealand on Sunday. Tucker intends to spend a week or 10 days at his stables, mainly to watch the progress of the rising two-year-olds, which are being prepared for the new season. He will then return to Brisbane.

Paper Strip and Rising Fast are due to leave Brisbane about the middle of next month for Melbourne, where they are to contest important spring handicaps. Tucker said that Karendi was the best horse he saw in Australia. He considers that useful middle-distance horses in the Dominion could hardly fail to do well in Australia.

DISSATISFACTION WITH HANDICAP “The Press” Special Service GREYMOUTH, July 20. There is nothing wrong with Royal Scroll, but she was allowed to drop out of the Levels Hack Handicap at the South Canterbury Hunt Club’s meeting on Saturday because her connexions were dissatisfied wih her handicap of 9-2.
