Huge Coal Stocks In Europe
(Rec. 8 p.m.) GENEVA, July 20. Stocks of coal at European pitheads, now at levels comparable with those of the depression of the 1930’5, may force the cutting back of production, according to a report published in Geneva today by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. Belgian and French stocks are particularly large, the report said. • Cutbacks which lead to unemployment have already been made in Belgium. In Britain, where expanding consumption needs are continuously ahead of supplies, the pithead stocks were normal, the report said. It added that in Western Europe as a whole, coal production had increased slightly compared with the previous winter.
