Queen’s Champagne For Reporters
(Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, July 18. The Queen sent across a case of champagne to the press tent at Ascot yesterday after her horse Aureole won the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, so that the reporters, “as representatives of the nation,” could celebrate her good fortune. French, German, Italian, and British reporters stopped work, and stood to attention as they drank champagne from mugs without handles and also broken cups. They toasted: “The Queen, God Bless Her,” and some added: “Here’s a health unto Her Majesty.”
The Queen’s gesture wag unique in living memory. Champagne was brought across to the tent by a barman—but nobody took any notice until he shouted: “Champagne’ A case from Her Majesty the Queen to the press with her compliments.” Then the reporters stopped work, and after a moment’s stunned silence stood up. Outside the tent there had been scenes of wild enthusiasm as the Queen’s horse won.
