ST. MARGARET’S COLLEGE FETE

£650 FOR BUILDING FUND The school building fund of St. Margaret’s College will be increased by £650 as a result of a fete held in the school on Saturday evening. More than 700 persons, including the pupils, their parents, and friends from all parts of Canterbury, crowded round the well-stocked stalls, and also joined in the various forms of entertainment provided. Some of the goods came from as far as Southland. The pupils of the school were fully responsible for the planning of the fete, and were also in charge of the stalls and the programme. It was first planned by the pupils of form SUA as part of their contribution to the building fundi The organiser was Mrs B. C. Penny, assisted by members of the staff. Help was also given by many of the children’s parents.

OBITUARY MRS W. H. FORTUNE (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 18. Mrs Q. Fortune, wife of Mr W. H. Fortune, Minister in charge of Police, died suddenly at her home, 318 Jervois road, Herne Bay, this morning. She was 55. Mrs Fortune was born in Dunedin, and was the sister of Mr R. A. Laidlaw, a prominent Auckland businessman. She was a prominent social worker. She is survived by her husband, one daughter, and her brother.

CURRENT NOTES Mrs W. Pattison presided at the July meeting of the executive committee of the Canterbury Federation of Country Women’s Institutes. Sympathy was expressed with Mrs Macßae in the illness of her husband. A donation was received from the Templeton institute for the building fund. Three institutes signified their approval to charge the pool fund to the travelling expenses fund. It was decided to hold the halfyearly council meeting in Akaroa. Two applications were received for good service badges.

Mrs L. Hollings presided at the general meeting for July of the Home Economics Association. Miss Shaw spoke on economical sweet and savoury dishes that would provide the necessary ingredients for good health. Eggless and one-egg cakes were displayed and sold. Mrs Collins gave two humorous short stories. Hostesses were members of the committee.

Miss Audrey Daniels, accompanied by Mrs Armiger, sang songs at the recent meeting of the Gold Star Mothers’ Club. Competitions were won by Mrs M. G. Scott and Mrs Chapman. Members reported visits made to Rannerdale Home. Mrs M. G. Scott presided.

Mrs S. J. Kay presided at the July meeting of the Spreydon branch of the League of Mothers. Miss M. G. Havelaar gave a talk on an Austrian orphanage, Schauboden, and members were particularly interested because they had brought along clothing so that it could be sent to the orphanage. The choir sang two songs, and Miss Millar cared for children in the creche.
