WAIMATE HUNT CLUB

MEETING POSTPONED TILL TODAY

TIMES BETWEEN EVENTS SHORTENED

The Waimate District Hunt Club’s centennial steeplechase meeting, which was postponed on Saturday because of bad weather, will now be held today. Officials of the club attended a special meeting at 11.30 a.m. on Saturday, and, after being told that the Racing Conference had given its approval for the race meeting to be held either today or on Wednesday, decided to race today. Tne times between events have been shortened, so that the last race is now timed to start at 3.40 p.m. This will enable other centennial functions to be held in Waimate after the meeting today. The weather has cleared, but the track will be heavy today. The meeting has been robbed of much interest by the withdrawal of all of W. E. Hazlett’s team. This Invercargill owner-trainer appeared likely to have a particularly successful meeting with Chief Light and Test Flight (Studholme Hurdles). Sentinel (Waimate Hunt Cup), and Glenlivet (Te Waimate Steeples). He was wrongly informed that the meeting was to be held on Wednesday, however, and at the week-end gave his horses routine treatment which will prevent them from racing today. Gold Belle (Waihao Handicap) has also been scratched.

In the absence of Hazlett’s pair in the Studholme Hack and Hunters’ Hurdles, Exchequer appears likely to win. He was runner-up to Chief Light over hurdles at Ashburton last month, and, at his only start since, fell when sharing the lead at the first fence in the Tekapo Hurdles at Washdyke on July 3. Brutus schooled pleasingly at Wingatui during last week, and in this field, which now appears a weak one, should at least reach a place. Magical and Miro Chabo, which have both been uplaced in hurdle events recently, appeal most of the others.

Red Tinge and Square Dance should prove a popular combination with doubles investors. ' Red Tinge showed a lot of speed in his.race on the first day of the Trentham meeting, and, if he has travelled well, may show his appreciation of the drop in class by winning the first leg of the double, the Waihao Hack Handicap. Most likely to extend Red Tinge may be the speedy Roi du Bois, and Direct Passage which must now not be far from the good form she showed last season. Square Dance’s strongest rivals in the second leg of the double, the Redcliff Hack and Hunters’ Flat Handicap, appear to be Owl’s Way and Boniface. First Whack is capable of a surprise, however. Glenlivet’s absence from the Te Waimate Steeplechase will make Fort Silver’s task easier, and he is expected to win. Battle Signal and Scorpion should also race well here. Flying Owl and Topical Cim will form a strong bracket in the Novice Stakes, and although the promising Silver Trumpet is also engaged, this bracket is selected to win. Topical Cim has shown in work at Riccarton that she is very adept in heavy going. Selections:— 11 ajn.—Hunt Club Steeples: Gabriel’s Gully, Debden.
