MAGISTRATE’S COURT

SATURDAY (Before Mr A. L. Burk, J.P., and Mr H. A. Stevens, J.P.) WILFULLY DAMAGED WINDOW Leonard Desmond Turvey, aged 21, a labourer, was fined £5 on a charge that on July 16 he wilfully damaged a leadlight window valued at £5, the property of the New Zealand Breweries. He was ordered to make good the damage. On a charge of being found drunk on the Main North road, Papanui, he was convicted and discharged.

Senior-Sergeant A. B. Collinge said that at 4.40 p.m. the police were called to the Papanui Hotel. They found the accused suffering from cuts to a hand. He was drunk. It appeared that he had gone into the hotel in . an aggressive mood and asked to be served wih liquor. He was refused, and on the way out he put his fist through a leadlight window in a door. “This man is a bit of a problem. He has three previous convictions for drunkenness, fighting, and obstructing the police. It looks as if his drinking habits should be curtailed in some way,” said Senior-Sergeant Collinge. Turvey said he admitted that he was drunk, but claimed that the damage to the window was not done intentionally. He had tried to push open the door, and when it would not open he had pushed his fist through the window.

John Gough Newton, aged 35, a labourer, was remanded to July 22 on a charge that on July 16 he stole a quantity of fish valued at £2 10s, the property of Peter Pavlides. He was allowed bail in his own recognisance of £25. He is to report to the police daily. John Leslie Williams, aged 20, a baker’s labourer, was remanded to July 22 on a charge that on June 26 he broke and entered the countinghouse of the National Mortgage and Agency Company, Ltd., 11 Sophia street, Timaru, and committed theft. Detective-Sergeant G. W. Alty .said that other - charges might be preferred. Bai* of £75, with one surety of £75, was allowed, conditional on his reporting daily to the police.
