IMPROVEMENT OF ROADS
Bigger Subsidies For Some Counties OFFER BY NATIONAL BOARD (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 16. The National Roads Board aecidet today to offer financial assistance the form of increased subsidies to a number of counties which are in financial straits. * The assistance will be given for the express purpose of carrying out essential road improvements which toe counties, though levying rates as hign as practicable, could not otherwise carry out. The names of the counties were nor given for publication. . The board decided also to the • Counties’ Association and tne Municipal Association, advising them of the action taken, and to District Commissioners of Works, asking them to name any other local authority which they thought should receive similar assistance. _ a The chairman (Mr F. M. H. Hanson) said that the condition of some roaas in the relatively impecunious counties was such that, in the national interest, assistance should be given the counties urgently. A sub-committee was set up to prepare a report for next month's meetiß-, of the board. I The board decided to treat as a matter of urgency the settlement basis of payment to local authorities of funds for the maintenance of roaas classed as industrial.
