WEDDING IN LONDON

CHRISTCHURCH GIRL MARRIED (From the London Correspondent of “The Press”) LONDON, July 9. A ballerina-length gown of powder blue grosgrain was worn by Marie Evelyn, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs E. A. Winchester, Horotane Valley, Christchurch, for her marriage at St. Peter’s Church, Cricklewood, London, to Edward Thomas, only son of Mrs E. G. Giles and the late Mr T. H. Giles, of Lupceme road, Remuera. The matron of honour was Mrs Alison Keen, of Lowry Bay, Wellington. and her husband, Mr Warwick Keen, was best man. Among New Zealand guests who attended the reception at the Victoria League headquarters in Belgrave square was Mrs J. N. Thompson, wife of the vicar who officiated, the Rev. J. N. Thompson. Mr Thompson was formerly vicar of Hampden,’ North Otago, and Anderson’s Bay, Dunedin, and is a friend of the bride’s family. Other guests included Miss Marjorie Homer, Miss Barbara Dentice, friends of the bride on the staff of New Zealand House; Dr. John Morton, a fellow student and associate of the bridegroom; and friends from the Victoria League Students’ Club. The honeymoon will be spent in South Cornwall. Mr Giles, a graduate of Auckland University College, is doing post-grad-uate research for a Ph.D. degree at the Imuerial College of Science and Technology. He met his bride, an old girl of Columba College, Dunedin, shortly after their arrival in London in September, 1952. Mr and Mrs Giles intend to return to New Zealand next January.

OBITUARY MISS E. E. NELSON Miss Elizabeth E. Nelson, a wellknown resident of Hororata. died recently. She had lived in the district for almost all her life. From the time when the Hororata Presbyterian Church was built almost 60 years ago, Miss Nelson had been its organist, and was also leader to generations of Sunday school pupils. She organised church concerts and socials, and no Presbyterian activity at Hororata was complete without her help. Miss Nelson was a prominent figure in musical cfrcles. She taught the playing of piano, other instruments, and singing. She had a fine contralto voice, and in her youth won high honours for singing. For many years, Miss Nelson was Hororata reporter for “The Press.” In that capacity, she was in touch with almost every organisation in a thriving district. Miss Nelson is survived by four brothers, one of whom, Mr Walter Nelson, still lives at Hororata.
