RACES OVER COUNTRY

INCREASED NUMBER APPROVED (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON. July 16. “The heavies jockeys in our district are not getting the riding they should,’’ said Mr H. R. Somerville, president of the South Canterbury Jockey Club, at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Racing Conference today. Mr Somerville was speaking to a remit from the Waimate Racing Club, seeking two races on programmes between May 1 and August 31 for hurdle and steeplechase jockeys. The remit was carried. Mr Somerville said that many of the heavier jockeys were lost to racing, and went to trotting because of lack of opportunities in his district. The president (Mr H. R. Chalmers) said he favoured the idea of the remit in broad principle, but he envisaged difficulties for certain small clubs, particularly those on the West Coast. Mr J. W. Hannan (Greymouth) said there had been no West Coast meetings between May and August over the last three or four years, but there was a possibility that racing would be held in that period some time in the future.
