MEN’S TITLE AT WIMBLEDON

LAWN TENNIS

Australians Reach Quarter-Finals TRABERT HAS HARD MATCH (NJZ. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, June 26. Australia’s big four in tennis, Lewis Hoad, Ken Rosewall, Mervyn Rose and Rex Hartwig today entered Wimbledon’s singles quarter-finals, but not before each had dropped a set. The Americans Tony Trabert, number one seed, and Vic Seixas, the titleholder, also entered the quarter-finals after five set matches. The other two quarter-finalists, Budge Patty, an American now living in Paris and Jarosalv Drobny, who now has Egyptian nationality, won their matches in straight sets. - The upset of the tournament seemed likely today when Davidson led Trabert 2-0 in the fifth set, but Trabert recovered to win 6-3. Trabert struggled with the tall Swede for two hours and a half before winning. The final outcome turned on a line decision with which Davidson clearly disagreed. When it was given against him he seemed to lose concentration and spirit. He dropped his service and Trabert won without further loss. Trabert did not show the form expected of a favourite. Brichant gave Seixas a lot of trouble before the American emerged the winner, 6- in the fifth set. Lewis Hoad avenged his French championship defeat by Gardnar Mulloy when he beat the American today in four sets. Hoad played superlative tennis in the second set, in which he allowed Mulloy only four points. Rosewall was given a fright by the 17y ear-old Australian, Ashley Cooper. Cooper, after winning the third set, led 7- in the fourth, with his service to follow. Rosewall eventually won the set, 10-8.

Mervyn Rose beat Kurt Nielsen (Denmark). last year’s Wimbledon runner-up, and in doing so showed very good form. Rex Hartwig always had control in his match against the American, Gil Shea.

N.Z. Players Qnuse Upset The New Zealanders, Mark Otway and Jeff Robson, caused an upset when they beat Bob Falkenburg (Brazil) and Shea in five sets in the second round of the men’s doubles. The New Zealanders seem certain to enter the quarter-finals, as they should beat the British pair, H. Billington and D. Butler, in the third round.

Another New Zealander, John Barry, partnered by the American, Hal Burrows, also had a second-round five-sets match before they beat Neale Fraser (Australia) and G. Garrett (United States).
