N.Z. Women’s Institutes To Meet In Wellington

The biennial conference of Country Women’s Institutes will be held in the Town Hall, Wellington, next month, from July 20 to July 22. The official opening will be performed by Lady Norrie, and a welcome to delegates will be given by the Mayor of Wellington (Mr R. L. Macalister). The conference will be addressed by the Prime Minister (Mr Holland), the Minister for Social Welfare (Mrs G. H. Ross) and the Minister of Agriculture (Mr K. J. Holyoake). The Dominion president is Mrs E. McNaughton, and it is expected that representatives of most of the instil tutes in the Dominion will attend. As there are nearly 1000 institutes in New Zealand, the matter of accommodation in Wellington during the conference is proving a problem for some women.

Mrs McNaughton is retiring from the presidency and two. nominations have been received for the position. They are T. J. Cotter, of Pahiatua, and Mrs J. W. Martin, of Dunedin. That members are keenly interested in the affairs of the institute is shown by the fact that there are 28 nominees for the eight seats on the Dominion executive.

During the conference the final of the Women’s Institutes’ Dominion drama festival will be held. Elimination tests have been held or are still •to be held in the various areas, and the

winning team in the North Island and the two leading teams in the South Island .will compete for the championship on July 21. At the last conference, two teams from the North Island and one from the South Island competed in the final.
