HEWS FOR WOMhH W.D.F.F. MEMBERS CRITICISE PRODUCTS OF N.Z. FACTORIES
A panel representing the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation will Oe questioned about their products by delegates to the annual Dominion conference of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers, to be held in Wellington from July 27 to July 30.
The members of the division have many complaints to make, mainly about clothing, and they will offer useful suggestions. They hope to receive some helpful information from the Manufacturers’ Federation.
Canterbury will present a remit ■which will ask for more generous turnings to be allowed in men’s pyjamas and the backs of men’s working trousers. Some of these garments tend to break away at the seams because of insufficient turnings, says the remit. Double knees in men’s working trousers will be suggested by Tauranga countrywomen. Another branch wants better cotton used for the same type of trousers. The frequent laundering which these garments need soon plays havoc with the cotton, this remit claims.
Tauranga will also ask that a small card of matching wool be attached to jumpers and cardigans by the manufacturers. This practice is often followed by English and Scottish knitwear firms.
Both Hurunui and Otago country-
women want more silk stockings on the market. Older women, especially, often prefer silk to other kinds of stockings, they say. A protest from North Auckland will be made against the giving of evidence by juveniles in divorce cases. A remit will ask that juveniles be not called in such cases. Royal Tour Committees That women were not represented on the committee for the Royal tour arrangements is a matter about which the North Auckland division feels strongly. It will put forward a remit asking that, in the event of any future Royal visits to New Zealand, the Government be urged to include a representative of women’s interests on Royal tour committees. Before entering a main highway there should be compulsory stopping of all vehicles, says a South Canterbury remit, which will urge the Government to ensure this. Female social security beneficiaries would in many cases be able to make a real contribution to helping in country homes if they were allowed to earn more, says a remit from North King Country and Wanganui. The remit asks for the Government to permit greater earnings by beneficiaries, as a practical gesture of help to busy country housewives.
