PRICES OF RAW LEAF TOBACCO
INCREASE ANNOUNCED (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 11. An increase in the prices of raw leaf tobacco was announced in the Gazette last night. An executive of one of the large cigarette and tobacco manufacturing companies said it did not mean that there would be an increase in retail prices. “We carry large stocks, and there is no reason to suppose that the raw leaf price increase will mean an increase in consumer prices of tobacco and cigarettes in the foreseeable future,” he said. The new Order increases the average district price of flue-cured leaf for the 1953-54 season to 3s IOJd per lb. It had been 3s 6Jd. Manufacturers have been paying the new price since buying commenced in May. They can pay above or below the price mentioned for different qualities, but over the season must average 3s 10|d. Most leaf is flue-cured. The price for airdried leaf is 3d cheaper. Manufacturers are obliged by law to use not less than 30 per cent, of New Zealand-grown leaf in their total output of tobacco and cigarettes, but they have voluntarily agreed to use not less than 32J per cent.
