RECORD POWER LOAD
The demand for power in the South Island reached a record peak of 236,900 kilowatts betwen 5 p.m. and 5.30 p.m. on Thursday, but the State Hydro-elec-tric Department did not have to impose cuts. The previous highest peak was 224,000 k.w., and the peak on Tuesday evening, when cuts were imposed, was 222,000 k.w. Since then the No. 7 generator at Waitaki, which passed tests on Thursday, has been operating satisfactorily. Storage lakes are still'well above retention levels. The level of Coleridge is 7ft above retention level, Tekapo 13$ ft above, Pukaki 15Jft, Waipori 19ft, and Monowai 6ft. Lake storage in the South Island fell by 1,830,000 units to 111,500,000 units in the 24 hours ended yesterday morning.
