EXPRESSES DELAYED BY DERAILMENT
ENGINE STRIKES COW NEAR KAIKOURA
The Christchurch-Pictori and PictonChristchurch expresses were' delayed yesterday when the north-bound train was derailed near the Kowhai station about three miles south of Kaikoura The engine struck a wandering cow and the front wheels of the leading bogie left the rails. About 36 passengers were taken by New Zealand Railways Road Services buses from Kowhai to Kaikoura.
An engine was sent from Kaikoura with equipment and the engine ’ was put back on the rails and the train went on to Kaikoura. The south-bound express was turned round at Kaikoura and returned to Picton while the north-bound train was later turned, at Kaikoura and returned to Christ-' church. Tlie Picton express left Kaikoura about 2.20 p.m., one hour 20 minutes late, and reached its destination at 6.09 p.m. instead of at 4.40 p.m. The south-bound express left Kaikoura at about 3.30 p.m. and arrived in Christchurch at 7.39 pjn., one hour 32 minutes late.
