BACKYARD FIRES

Sir, —l noticed in “The Press” on Friday that a man had been fined for lighting a fire within 30 feet of a shed. Could you please inform me if this by-law’ applies. to backyard fires and boundary fences? We are at this time of the ydar continually embarrassed by a neighbour’s fires which not only fill our house with smoke, but are lit very close to the dividing fence. —Yours, etc., NARROW SECTION. May 10, 1954. [The Town Clerk (Mr H. S. Feast) said that the relevant by-law says: “No person shall light any fire in the open air in the city without giving previous notice in writing or by telephone to the Fire Brigade or the City Council of his intention to do so, but in no case shall any fire be lighted within 30 feet of any building or upon any Sunday, and every such fire shall be extinguished at sunset.” “It is understood that the Fire Board regards a fence as a building,” said Mr Feast.]
