NEW ZEALAND ARTS COUNCIL
Sir,—In answer to some inquiries we have had regarding the proposed New Zealand Arts Council, we would state that we had envisaged a council embracing all the arts, music, ballet, poetry, etc.; but initially our activities would be concerned with the arts of painting and sculpture. Further, we consider the council should be empowered to act through sectional committees in advisory, administrative, and ’executive capacities. Regarding the nervous protest by Mr McClung —that the “beer business” has already been killed—he or anyone in the average public house around 5.45 p.m. can see how alive the business is! The extra third of a penny a glass or thereabout that a penny on the pint would mean could, I’m sure, have no effect on these profits.—Yours, etc., ERIC J. DOUDNEY. June 6, 1954.
