72-Year-Old Woman To Marry N.Z. Man
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) VICTORIA (British Columbia), June 4. Miss Anna Coker, aged 72, arrived by aeroplane from Philadelphia today to meet and marry the sweetheart she had not seen in years. Bright-eyed and happy after her journey, Miss Coker said she had waited so long “I guess I can wait a few more days. But I am not losing any more time,” she said. “I am going to get our marriage licence today.” Miss Coker said she doubted whether she would be able to recognise her husband to be, Mr John Edgecombe, aged 70, when he arrives on Monday from New Zealand. “But he’ll recognise me for sure,” she said.
Miss Coker said she sent Mr Edgecombe pictures of herself after she received his recent proposal but she did not get any from him. She and Mr Edgecombe were hood sweethearts in England but her father broke up their friendship in 1906. She later settled in the United States and Mr Edgecombe went to New Zealand where he became a prosperous dairy farmer. The couple will be married on Monday and will return to New Zealand. “I know I’ll be very happy,” Miss Coker said.
