NORTH ISLAND TITLE

N. AMON BEATEN BY W. WATSON FIRST TWO ROUNDS OF MATCH PLAY. (New Zealand Press Association) w CAMBRIDGE. June 6. J?., Roach (Hamilton), L. W. Owen (Lochiel), I. Deadman (Springfield), and W. Watson (Grange) are the-semi-finalists in the North Island amatelir golf championships, being contested at Cambridge. A feature of today’s play was Watson’s defeat of N. Amon (Wanganui). Amon played splendid golf to be out in 35, but was 2 down because of Watson’s' phenomenal sequence of four birdies in the first six holes. Amon won the tenth, but Watson’s putting was exemplary. Amon was 2 down with three to play, but scored a birdie 3 on the sixteenth and squared the match on the eighteenth green. Watson scored a birdie at the 445-yard twentieth, and won the match. Dwen surprised by beating A. C. Relph and' R. Court: - Deadman. who qualified, rather fortuitously, showed his mettle as a matchplayer. After beating H. P. Dale, he had a titanic struggle with last year’s rimnerup, D. Leng-waxd. Each player was but of bounds once. ' Leng-Ward gained a short-lived lead at but excellent putting made Deiftlman 2 up with four to. play. . .. Yesterday, the following qualified for match play in thechampionship:— F.
