PLEA FOR A TREE

Sir, —Owing to a widespread and callous disregard of the beautifying effect of certain well-placed trees, there are now too few of these natural monuments left to mature in the growing wilderness of houses and bushes. At the north-east corner of Bower avenue and Beach road, a well known approximately 50-year-old bluegum tree is about to be torn down by council workmen, at the behest of the Post and Telegraph authorities, who placed their wires in a position they now consider too close to the tree. The local residents are thus to be deprived of one of the very few well placed monuments of nature, to suit the whim of a person who has little, if any, regard for the beautifying of this particular area—Yours, ect., L. G. ARCHER. June 1, 1954.

[The City Engineer, Mr E. Somers, said: “This matter is being referred to at the council meeting next Tuesday.”]
