BLOOD TEST FOR DRIVERS
Legislation Planned In N.S.W.
(Rec. 11 p.m.) SYDNEY, June 3. Suspected drinking drivers who refuse to undergo blood tests, will be liable to a fine under proposed legislation, the State Transport Minister (Mr J. Wetherell) said today. He said Magistrates had asked for the tests in the hope that they would remove confusion in adjudicating in these cases.
Mr Wetherell said the blood test would supply a Magistrate with evidence to test a defence that a driver was not drunk or had had only a few drinks. It would establish the amount of alcohol in a driver’s body.
The fact that a driver would not undergo tests would, no doubt, be weighed by a Magistrate. However, there might be legitimate reasons for a driver’s refusal to be tested, he said.
All drivers who submitted to a test would be supplied with a sample of their blood and could have it tested independently. The Minister said blood tests had been retained in all countries where they had been established and had proved highly efficient. Mr Wetherell said grave concern with the toll of the road had prompted the recommendation for the tests.
