MAN CRUSHED BY LOG
FATAL ACCIDENT AT PORT UNDERWOOD (New Zealand. Press Association) BLENHEIM, June 3. T A man died at Ocean Bay, Port Underwood, last night from injuries suffered when he was crushed by a large log. He was: William Matai Vaughan, aged 45, married. with one child. Mr Vaughan was assisting a treefelling contractor, Mr J. Berryman, of Blenheim, in cutting a large macrocarpa log, which was lying at an angle against two others. As the end of the lag was severed its balance altered, and it rolled off. Mr Vaughan was standing in its path, and as he turned to run he tripped on some branches. Before he could recover the log rolled on him.
Mr Vaughan lost consciousness and died soon afterwards.
MOTOR-CYCLISTS INJURED Two motor-cyclists were injured last evening in Olliviers road when one rode into a parked njotor-car and the other into the first motor-cycle. They are Noel John Mullan, aged 20, and Frederick Clark, aged 20, both of 580 Gloucester street. Mr Clark was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital with head injuries about 11 p.m. ‘His condition was later reported to be satisfactory. Mr Mullan was treated and sent home. Waterfront Amenities Committee A Waterfront Industry National Amenities Committee has been appointed by the Minister of Labour (Mr W. Sullivan). The appointments, for a term to expire on April 30, 1956, were gazetted last night as follows: — Messrs E. A. Bockett (chairman), A. R. Dyson and F. D. Harris (New Zealand Port Employers’ Association), W. T. Langbein (New Zealand Railways Department), R. E. Dawson and R. R. Reeves (Harbours’ Association of New Zealand). G. W. Swabey (North Island Waterfront Workers’ Industrial Association), and James Roberts (South Island Waterside Workers’ Federation). —(P.A.)
