SMART TRIALS AT ELLERSLIE

CABANA BRILLIANT OVER HURDLES

“The Press” Special Service ~ x AUCKLAND, June 3. Bretten and .Cabana did best at Ellerslie this morning when a good number of horses completed their fast work in preparation for the first day of the Auckland Racing Club’s winter meeting on Saturday. The stablemates. Commission and Cotswold, from Te Awamutu, made a good impression again when they galloped strongly over a mile and a quarter. Bretten accompanied Lyndomar and Lndian Scholar once round on the No 1 grass.

Cabana’s task was four hurdles on the outside of the course proper, and he performed it brilliantly. Bhikoo and Penryn shaped pleasingly over the same ground. The fast work was done on the inside of the No. 1 grass. The going was excel-

On the outside of the course proper, Cabana (Hill) led Solar Mist (Carter) by three lengths, with Canadian (Harris) four or five lengths' further back, after they had covered seven furlongs and four hurdles in Imin 43sec. There have been faster gallops over the ground, but not many as impressive. Cabana was in front almost from the start, and his effort was an the more meritorious because he ran right on the outside. He dashed clear after three furlongs or so, and finished full of running, A well-planned preparation has brought to a P® 3k of fitness for the Great Northern Hurdles. He looks certain to perform very prominently. Solar Mist ran satisfactorily, though not as brilliantly as Cabana. He is very fit. Bhikoo Pleases Bhikoo (Waddell) and Penry (Reven) ran well clear of Noon (Carter) and Pham ad (Turnwald) over seven furlong* and -four hurdles In Imin 40 3-ssec. Bhikoo was especially good. He BnMftied well He should be prominent in the Penrose Hurdles. Peaseblossom (Shield) travelled very easily, and did not look like making a mistake over four hurdles. She continues to improve. _ 2?J he . No ’ 1 grass Bretton (Gough), with the lightest weight, finished strongly just ahead of Silver Archer (Holmes). Lyndomar (G. Jenkins), and Indian Scholar (Wilson) after covering a mile in Imin 47sec. Bretton gave the others a start and ran the last three furlongs attractively in 40sec. He is in great order. Sc is Silver Archer. He was on the outside and also finished resolutely. Gallant Robin (Carlton) beat Irish Saint (K. Wilson) and Cogitation (B. Wilson) by a length after galloping once round in Imin 52Jsec. Gallant Robin galloped strongly on the outside. It was one of his very good days in training, Irish Saint had a welter weight up, so be did not go badly. Fair Town (Wilson) went once round and speeded up over the last half-mile in 52sec. He worked within himself and was keen to go faster. Fair Town has hardly ever been better. Commission (Waddell) and Cotswold (Harris) were too good for Chief Justice (K. Dulieu) when they galloped three rounds in Imin 55 l-ssec. At the finish they were four lengths ahead. They ran the last three furlongs in 40sec. It will not be for want of solid condition if Commission and Cotswold fail to run well fen the Great Northern Hurdles. Bracken Finishes Strongly Bracken (Hooton) finished strongly alongside Admiral’s Lass (Kerr), with Bronze Sailor (Wilson) not far behind, after covering seven furlongs in Imin 33sec. Argument (Cappie) was never at top

speed while running seven furlongs in imin 41sec. He worked with zest. Thomastown (Barron) ended six furlongs in imin 18 l-ssec. He is in good order. Ruthless Sal (Hooton) covered six furlongs in Imin 21sec. Swift View (Coon) and Count Minerva (Lord) finished together over a round and five fences of the steeplechase course, 15 fences altogether. TTiey began with the sod wall near the bottom of the straight and ended with the fence near the mile start. Royal Manner (Reynolds) and Peter TurnbuH (Turnwald) began with them. Royal Manner led for six or seven furlongs and then felL Remounted, he completed the course safely. Peter Turnbull jumped slowly and finished a long way behind. Count Minerva and Swift View jumped confidently and finished well. Royal Glimpse (Reynolds) jumped 14 fences on the steeplechase course. He gave a good display. Swift View, Count Minerva, and Royal Glimpse are candidates for the Great Northern Steeplechase on the second day on Monday. Extra Bracket at Wingatui The Totalisator Agency Board advises that Scotch Gift and Greetings will be bracketed in the Brighton Hack Handicap on the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting tomorrow.—(P-A_)
