“MAY BE END OF ROAD”

Oppenheimer’s Comment

(Rec. 8 p.m.) MELBOURNE, June 3. Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer said “maybe this is the end of the road for me” in a radio-telephone interview published in the Melbourne “Argus” today. Dr. Oppenheimer told an “Argus” writer, Colin Prosser, who communicated with him at his Princeton (New Jersey) home: “I was stunned and shocked by the news. . . . My wife is in tears . . . just a few tears. . . . She’s pretty brave about it all. Maybe this is the end of the road for me.”

He said he had “no sympathy, absolutely no sympathy, for communism ... but I have moral principles from which I will never depart.” Dr. Oppenheimer also told Prosser he hoped his appeal to the Atomic Energy Commission would be successful. He did not know 1 if he would leave the United States if it was not successful.

The “Argus” said Dr. Oppenheimer stated in the interview that shortly after he received the decision Professor Einstein visited him at his home and shook his hand.

Dr. Oppenheimer added: “Professor Einstein told me it was shameful, but he told me he was with me in it. The old professor has stuck to me right through.” ■?,.
