WAITAKI POWER STATION
SIXTH GENERATOR NOW OPERATING
Power from the No. 6 generator in the extension at the Waitaki power station has livened the lines of the South Island electricity grid since Wednesday. The No. 7 generator will probably not come into operation for a montn. The work of removing the last of the rock wall, 0 which acted as a coffer dam for the intake channel for the extended power station, was completed on Monday by the contractors (Downer and Company and Morrison-Knud-sen). Since the floods in the Waitaki river, the intake has been filled with water, let in-by the lowering of the coffer dam. Difficulty in getting to the bottom of the cut has been experienced by the contractors. The last shot under water was made on Monday and the spoil removed. The flow of water through the intake gates into the penstocks was then possible. Since then the first of the new generators has been working smoothly on test. The final stage of the contract for the extensions—the cleaning-up operation—is expected to last a month.
