FOREBODINGS OF MR ATTLEE
(Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDQN. May 2. The Leader of the Opposition (Mr Attlee) said yesterday that the world would be destroyed, not by barbarous forces, but because “ordinary people cannot control the inventions of scientists.” He told 2500 people at a Nottingham May Day rally that the powers of destruction were getting wbrse all the time in spite of the growth of internationalism. “Fifty years ago we were on the whole optimistic. We believed that civilisation went steadily ahead. “I don’t think we are so sure today, and we have a doubt as to whether our civilisation may not come down as other civilisations have done in th© past,” he said. “I think everyone realises the imminent danger, and if the wrong people are chosen, or if the mass of people are indifferent, there is quite a possibility that civilisation is crashing, and it is just worth remembering that that crash may be your own individual crash as well as a worjd crash.” Italian Racehorse Owner Dies.—Mr Federico Tesio, Italy’s biggest owner and trainer of thoroughbred racehorses, died suddenly today, aged 85. His horses won most of the world classics. Among the great champions produced by his stables was Nearco—considered by experts to* be the foundation of Britain’s post-war recovery on the turf.—Rome, May 1.
