SWEEPS FOR MAU MAU

Suspects Questioned In Nairobi (Rec. 8 p.m.) NAIROBI. May 1. Security forces have detained more than 15,000 Mau Mau suspects in roundups and sweeps in Nairobi in the last week. Big raids on African, Asian and European areas of the city by more than 8000 British and African troops and European, Asian and African police resulted in more than 28,000 Kikuyu. Embu and Meru tribesmen being rounded up for questioning. More than half failed to pass on-the-spot interrogations and were removed to a 1 screening camp encircled with barbed wire for detailed screening. Nearly 1000 hard-core terrorists have already been identified in the camp by former Mau Mau gangsters disguised in Ku Klux Klan-type hoods. Police plan to clear the city of gangsters, spivs and undercover Mau Mau leaders and passive Mau Mau supporters. Explosions in Detroit Hotel.—-A man set off three explosions in a Detroit hotel last night, killing himself and injuring five of the hotel’s 90 occupants. Eighteen rooms of the hotel were damaged.
