HAGLEY GOLF CLUB

GOLDEN- JUBILEE The Hagley Golf Club celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of its foundation on Saturday, when 100 players took part in special jubilee matches, and more than 150 players and guests attended an afternoon tea party held in a large marquee sdl up near the club's pavilion.

The visitors were received by Mrs H. O’Reilly, ladies' captain; apd Mr R. D. Johnson, men’s captain, and after tea htfd been served on beautifully decorated tables, Mr Johnson introduced Mr D. T. Warner, president of the club, who welcomed the guests, especially former players, and particularly Mr J. Wyn Irwin, Mr R. S. Kent, Miss E. M. Hill, and' Miss Valmai Fleming, who had won much success at golf. « Mr Warner spoke warmly of the work of Mr E. R. B. Harding and Mr C. W. Foote, who were largely responsible for the excellent conaition of the fairways and the marked improvement in the greens. Both’Mr Harding and Mr Foote, who had previously been captain, had held the office of president between the years 1950 and 1953, and Mr Harding was last year elected patron of the club. Since 1950 Mrs J. C. Chilman, Mrs J. G. Johnstbn (a previous cantain), and Mrs T. W. Wallace had carried oul the* duties of the lady secretary, anc Mrs Wallace fills that office at present. Mrs Ranting presented the prizes to: the following players who had won . the jubilee matches:—

Women.—Senior: Best gross score, Mrs T. W. Callender; best net, Mrs J. Palmer. Junior: Gross, Mrs E. R. B. Harding; net. Mrs W. McCullough. Men.—Senior: Gross, Mr D. T. Warner; net. Mr R. B. Nichols. Junior: Gross, Mr W. Cunningham; net, Mr H. R. Forscutt.. Approaching: Mrs A. Anderson. Mr G. G. Simpson. Putting: Miss G. M. Lloyd, Mr L. R. Stringer, Mr Harding planted a maple tree to mark the club’s anniversary.

CONTRACT BRIDGE TOURNAMENT

UNOFFICIAL PAIRS TITLE OF N.Z.

(New Zealand Preet AMOctatum) - NEW PLYMOUTH, May 2. More than 200 players iron, many parts of the Dominion took part in the annual contract bridge tournament conducted at the Chateau Tongariro during the week-end by the Auckland Contract Bridge Centre. The tournament was run in two sections, the main section being the chateau tournar-ei.t, the unofficial pairs championship of New Zealand. There is no official pairs champion-

ship. The championship winners were Messrs Bruce Hall and Rex Evans (Auckland), who took the lead in the second of the four sessions. The run-ners-up were Dr. D. D. Lyneff and Mrs P. Hall (Whangarei).

Mr C. L. Eastgate and Mrs H. Richards (Auckland) were third. Fourth place went to a South 'lsland pair, Mesdames J. Holder and O. Armstrong. The Tongariro pairs, the secondary event, was won by Messrs F. Nagel and T. Farrell (Auckland).

FANCY DRESS DANCE

At the invitation of the president and committee of the Opawa Lawn Tennis Club, about 90 guests attended a fancy dress dance at the National Club rooms on Saturday night. The hall was decorated with flowers, and red, white and blue colours. The president of the club (Mr C. N. Franklin) and Mrs Franklin welcomed the guests, who were all in fancy dreSs costume. The grand parade, in which the most outstanding costumes had to be chosen, provided a difficult task for the judges, Mesdames T. W. Patterson and F. G. Ullrich. The winners were: -best couples, Mr and Mrs L. Timlin f, W. D. Rawlings and Miss E. Oakley 2; best woman. Mrs. H. W. 'Hunter; best man, K. Gerrard; intet original woman, Mrs K. W. Lueas; most original man, John Barton; most outstanding, woman Mrs E, ThomaiH-inost outstanding man C. Fitzgerald; most inexpensive tume—woman; Miss R. Loader; nan R. Campbell The master of ceremonies was th< secretary of the social committee (Mi W. R, Rollinson) and the arrangement' for the dance were made by the specia committee: Mr Franklin (chairman! Mesdames I. Jackson and C. R. Bailey. Misses L. M. Blakley, B. R. Burrowes, . P. E. Foster, J>E. Cressey, R. N. Loader, Messrs R. A. Anderson, W. D. Rawlings, Rollinsqp, and R. T. Stuart.
