THIRD ROUND MATCHES IN WOODWARD, BLANK CUPS

GOLF

Some of Canterbury’s best players were engaged in the Woodward Cup third round match between Templeton and Christchurch A at Kaiapoi yesterday, and they provided some golf worthy of the occasion. It was a particularly close match, four of the games being halved, but Templeton lost again by the same score, 3-5, it had lost by after performing well in the first two rounds of the competition. Waitikiri had an easy win over Kaiapoi and with Christchurch A retained the lead in the contest.

The leading players in the Temple-ton-Christchurch A match were R. Clements and H. J. Gosset, who met in the final of the Christchurch Club’s match play championship at the Easter tournament. On that occasion Clements won handsomely, and yesterday he began playing golf of remarkable, quality. By the turn, when he was three strokes under scratch, he had won a lead of 5 up, and the game seemed all but over. On the homeward half, however, Clements fell into frequent error, and Gosset, a very competent match player, retrieved holes with such regularity that he halved the match.

Two particularly promising young players, P. Lewis and R. D. Kearns, playing second, halved their match, in which the scoring was also good. B. Forrest, the young Timaru player, came into the Templeton team at number three, but fell to C. J. Ward’s steady match play and in the fourth match there was some fine golf from J. L. Blair (Templeton) and J. G. Scott, a young player with a future in the game. Blair won on the last green, and both players were a stroke better than scratch for the round. They made few errors, and Scott, with the pressure on, holed a 14-foot putt for the eagle three he had to have at the difficult dog-leg seventeenth to keep the game alive. Blair has played little competitive golf in recent years, but he is an experienced player who seems to be getting back to his best form. Avondale, beaten by Christchurch B, has scored only one point in three rounds, but this team is slandered by statistics, for in three matches it has won 11 games and lost 13. Waitikiri, playing its team in an unusual order, had no difficulty in beating Kaiapoi at Shirley, Waitikiri’s J. Devine, occupying a humble eighth position, contrived to record the best round of the day—two under scratch 70. Devine, with C. C. A. Bernard

(Avondale), C. J. Ward (Christchurch A) and G. A. Mcßeath (Russley A) has the distinction of having won all three Woodward Cup games this season.

Russley A, which shared a match J with Avondale in the first round, beat £ Russley B by 7| to i in a sort of f golfing cannibal feast, and retains _ third place in the competition. j Waitikiri A had a bye in the north- C ern section of the Blank -Cud com- I petition, and has been joined in the ® lead by Russley A and Kaiapoi, c neither of which has yet had a bye. / In the southern' section, Waimalri" A t was held to a draw by Christchurch, but is still leading by half a point from * Avondale. , , 'j Points are:—Woodward Cup: Waitikiri - 3, Christchurch A 3, Russley A 24, Christ- d church B 2, Avondale 1, Kaiapoi 4, Tem- q pieton 0, Russley 80. , Blank Cup.—Northern section: Russley J A 2, Waitikiri A 2, Kaiapoi 2, Rangiora * 1, Rawhiti 1, Waimairl B rf 1, Hagley "B 0. *■ Rawhiti, Rangiora and Waitikiri A have Bad byes. SOUTHLAND LOSES TO OTAGO

(New Zealand Press Association) J DUNEDIN, May 2. s Otago beat Southland by 17 matches to J 7 at Bahnacewen today, in an inter- *3 provincial golf contest. s The leading six players in each team, i who will compete in the Freyberg Rose i Bowl tournament later this month, played I against each other. Each side won three ! of these matches. EXHIBITION MATCH AT j WAIMATE A very high standard of golf was dis- ! played in an exhibition match played on J the Waimate Golf Club’s course yesterday, when E. G. Kerr, of the Highfleld : club, Timaru (1953 South Island cham- , pion), and T. F. Healey, of Waimate, beat N. H. Fuller, of Shirley (former New , Zealand professional champion), and D. . B. Samways, of Waimate, 3 and 2, in an exhibition match. Healey and Samways have each won : the Waimate club’s senior championship on several occasions. Samways did not , strike his usual form yesterday. Fuller delighted a large gallery of spectators with some beautifully-executed shots. , Kerr played a consistent game throughout. Healey, who had to pick up at one hole because of an unplayable lie, gave a good performance. Allowing a six for that hole, the round would nave been completed in 70, which is two under par for the course. Fuller gave a demonstration and talk after the match.
