NELSON CLUB’S MEETING

MAINLANDER WINS CUP RACE

ANOTHER SECOND PLACING TO PLEASURE BENT “The Press' 1 Special Service

NELSON, April 11. < A Trentham hack, Mainlander, , secured a lucky run through a packed field at the straight entrance in the - Nelson Cup, the main race 1 and second ■ leg of the double at the Nelson Club’s meeting on Saturday. He dashed through brilliantly to secure an ad- , vantage outside the last furlong, and • just held off the fast-finishing topweight, Pleasure Bent, which did not clear the tiring leaders until too late. Pleasure Bent has run five close] seconds in succession in handicap ranks, and has lost every time to a lighter-weighted and different horse. The Greymouth mare, Aglow, which was twice placed at Blenheim, won the Novice Stakes, the first of the double, from the odds-on favourite. Succeed. Succeed was unlucky, as he was allowed to drift in the middle stages. The Newman Handicap marked the return to form of a good-class galloper, Royal Legend, which had failed badly in seven previous starts, Legalia, which had delayed the start, Craig, Milicena, and Muzama were ah slow away in the Novice Stakes, in-which Newington Green and Succeed began brilliantly. Newington Green had a lead of four lengths past the half-mile, where Succeed had dropped in behind Minnie Mouse, Miss Sunshine, Aglow, and Claredawn. There was little change in the order at the straight entrance, but Newington Green tired, and Aglow appeared likely to have an easy win. Succeed gamely attempted to bridge the gap, but failed by half a length. » _ . They were just clear. of Claredawn, which just shaded Miss Sunshine and Minnie Mouse. The rest failed badly.

The Cup i , Mainlander began well in the Nelson Cup. First to move into the lead were Adowa and Brown Baron, but their jockeys checked them back sharply and the field bunched up. Lights On and loghorn were disputing the lead with seven furlongs to run, with Brown Baron, Golden Spa, Pleasure Bent, Chief Mate, Adowa, and Sports Edition next in close Chief Mate pulled up to the leaders near the half-mile, but in doing so appeared to take Sports Edition very wide. Chief Mate and Foghorn led across the t6p, but they were tiring before turning into line, and they fell back on to Pleasure Bent, which had just cleared the drifting Lights On. Brown Baron was also being hampered. Sports Edition was being forced even wider out. Mainlander secured his lucky run and. vigorously ridden by an apprentice, r. Carbin, held off Pleasure Bent’s final challenge on the rails. Brown Baron was close up. with Sports Edition coming home strongly for fourth, a head away. Chief Mate was almost m line. Then came Lights On, Valley Gold,

and Golden Soa. Dandy got the best of the start in the Newman Handicap, in which Payloch was very slow to move. Royal Legend was in front at the half-mile. He had »-■ lead of four lengths at the turn, with Plausible and Mistv Range handiest. Roval Legend was still galloping well inside last furlong, but he weakened visibly towards the end. and Dandy and Miefv R*nge extended him fully. Onlv fou v starters went to the for tbe Hack Hurdles. Cbasemint and Ironside made all the running; and the latter, taking his fences faster, made Chasemint fe*»l his weight all the wav to keen within striking distance. However, Ironside was dehnHelv superior.

Waimea Handicap Beau Ray had to be good to win the Waimea Handicap, as he and Roylal Road took the barrier tapes and lost a lot of ground. Beau Ray was last turning for home, tftit he swept past Owl’s Way, Stormtide, and Skyzami inside the furlong and ran on strongly to beat Owl’s Way. Skyzami, hampered for room nn straightening up, beat Royal Road and Stormtide. Stormtide had to be checked several times because of a hanging tendency. There was another attractive performance in the Tahuna Handicap, when Relinquish atoned for last Monday’s defeat at Blenheim by overhauling the leaders a’fter being last across the top turn. Relinquish, which may be tested if he meets Beau Ray on Monday, is in good foi'm. Castle Queen was unlucky, as Jolly Miller appeared to take her ground. Royal Oak returned to form to beat tne consistent Royal Charm- in the Hope Hack Handicap. Queensway and Royal Charm made the pace to the straight. The topweight, Eastern Friend, which raced wide most of the way, battled on for third, but her jockey weighed in 4Jlb light, and she was disqualified. Skyzami, which lost ground at the start, was promoted to third. Hermes W’as promoted to fourth. The meeting opened in overcast weather, with light showers later in the afternoon. The track was fast. There was a good attendance. The totalisator handled £29,497, including £2124 on the double, compared with £30,536 10s last year—a decrease of £1039 10s compared with last year.
