WATER FOR SHIPS
TIMARU HARBOUR BOARD INCREASES PRICES (From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU, March 26. The Timaru Harbour Board will increase the rate charged to ships for water from 4s a thousand gallons to 4s 6d a thousand gallons from April 1 this year. A special resolution embodying the projetted increase was approved unanimously at today’s meeting of the board. The increase follows an increase in the rate charged the Harbour Board by the Timaru City CouncilThe Harbour Board protested to the council recently against this increase in the water rate from 2s to 2s M a thousand gallons. Members of the board said that the increase was unwarranted as the board was already paying much more than the Is 3d .a thousand gallons charged other big water users. w The chairman of the board (Mr WH. Hall) said today that the originally contracted to pay more Xo r water than other users because th® council then maintained the lines. Tius service was no longer in operation but the board was still paying tne higher rate t It was stated at the meeting that no check was made on the amount oi water taken on by ships watering at the port. The board will investigate the advisability of installing meters. . The new water charge will be xnc same as 'that at other ports in w Dominion.
