STOCK EXCHANGES MARKETS FIRM IN QUIET TRADING Although somewhat quieter, markets on the Christchurch Stock Exchange yesterday were firm to firmer in. the case of New Zealand stocks, ahd fractionally weaker for Australian-based chain, stores. Government securities continued to gather strength. There were buyers for 14 3 per cent, issues and sellers for only b?ds Several 3 per cents - elicited higher Banks, breweries, gas, insurance, and frozen meats were all particularly firm, and it was noted that buyers for New Zealand Refrigerating contributings advanced to 18s 6d, with sellers 3d away. Among the loan and agency stocks. New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative issues continued to be very firm. National Mortgage A advanced further to buying offers of SS 7d. Seilers among the woollens kept off the market, although there were plenty of buying offers. In line with recent, sales at other centres, Kaiapoi ordinaries improved to buyers at 25s 3d, but sellers were again reticent. Whakatane Board ordinaries, which have had steady and persistent buying inquiry of late, had business and ’buyers at 17s 6d.

Chain stores were active. Woolworths, New Zealand, had sales and buyers at the improved price of 19s 9d. On the other hand, Woolworths, Ltd., were fractionally easier in sales and sellers at 16s lid, whilst Coles slipped up 3d to business at 17s 6d and 17s sd, but the market recovered at the close to buyers at 17s 7d, with sellers Id away.
