STRANGE FISH LANDED
“BETWEEN TROUT AND SALMON” ’★The Press" Special Service DUNEDIN, February 25. A fish landed recently in the lower reaches of the Clutha river has been found ‘to belong to no particular species, but Mr A. E. Hefford, former chief inspector of fisheries for the Marine Department, has placed the fish between the salmon and the trout. The fish has caused much controversy in angling circles in the last few days. Mr Hefford, who submitted a report to the Otago Acclimatisation Society, says that at a glance the fish had many characteristics of the salmon, but a closer inspection of its anatomical make-up placed it between the .salmon and the trout, with a leaning towards the latter. The fish weighed about 4b and was 22in long. It was not impossible, he said, that the fish was a • trout with a strain of salmon blood in its ancestry. Or it might well be that some of the searunning trout were evolving a salmonlike anatomy. These might become still more salmon-like after a few thousand generations.
