SIZE OF SOVIET ARMED FORCES
LONDON, February 10. Russians armed forces haye increased by 150,000 to 4,750,000 since 1951, the House of Commons was told today. The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry af Defence (Mr Nigel Birch) gave thesei figures in reply to a question. He said that the armed forces of Russia’s Eatsf European associates had increased l>y nearly 120,000 to 1,190,600. Mr Birch, added that the Soviet increase was- mainly because of the growth of tihe Russian Navy. China had armed forces of more than 4.000.0 CW and there were between 0,000.000 and 10,000.000 in the militia. Mr Emrys .Hughes (Labour) asked if Britain was relatively stronger as a result of her rearmament over the last three yeairs. Mr Birch replied: “Yes, we now have something approaching realistic defence which we had not got before.”
