SERIOUS RIOT IN CALCUTTA
Protest At Arrest Of Teachers
(Rec. 9 p.m.) NEW DELHI, Feb. 17. Four persons were killed and 65 injured in riots which broke out in Calcutta yesterday after the police had used tear-gas and made lathi charges to disperse a mob of 10,000 marching to demonstrate outside the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.
The riots started as a protest against the arrest of school teachers who had been squatting for five days on the street outside Government House in support of their demand for increased pay and allowances. The mob, after atoning the nolfce, fled to a nearby square, where a pitched battle took place with the police. Hooliganism then became widespread, and the demonstrators roamed the city setting fire to buses and tram-cars, breaking the windows of shops and restaurants, and looting markets.
The police fired three times on the rioters to restore order, and regained, control of the situation after three, hours.
Late last night the Government called in troops to help the police maintain order, and imposed a section of the criminal code throughout Calcutta prohibiting the assembly of more than four persons.
