CRATER LAKE ON RUAPEHU
“ MAJOR CHANGE IN BED ” DECREASE IN DEPTH (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, -February 17. Soundings taken in the crater lake on Mount Ruapehu by a party of canoeists last week-end show that there has been a major change in the lake bed in the last four years. Mr J. Mason, president of the New Zealand Canoeing Association, said ir Auckland today that in 1950 the depth th® lake on the north-south line was 264 ft. Last week-end. the depth at same spot was 213 ft. “This shows a considerable change in 1 actual bed, for it has been estimated that the lake level rose at least oOft since 1950.” he said. “At Christmas it dropped 24ft. when the outlet burst. This leaves 72ft unaccounted for.
The variation could have been caused by an accumulation of silt from the crater sides, or by eruptions in the lake bed itself. Mr Mason said.
