NEW GUIDED MISSILE

ISSUE TO U.S. ARMY UNITS

(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) NEW YORK, Feb. 16. A new type of guided missile with a 50-mile range was being issued to Army units for tactical use, the United States Army Chief of Staff (General Matthew Ridgway) said at Palm Beach, Florida, today. He also reported details of a new rapid-firing rocket with the reach of heavy artillery and the explosive force of hundreds of rounds of artillery shells. General Ridgway said the two missiles would be used in large-scale field exercises this year. He added that the rocket was of simple design, easy to operate, and well suited to rapidly moving battle situations. While General Ridgway emphasised the progress in weapons development, he asserted that weapons never could replace ground forces.
