WORLD LIST OF ROAD DEATHS
New Zealand Placed Sixth
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) GENEVA, Feb. 16. Australia had more fatal road accidents on a population basis than any country among the 15 covered by the World. Health Organisation report today. New Zealand came sixth on the list—after Australia, the United States, Canada, West Germany, and Switzerland —but the figures do not all apply to the same year. Australia’s, for instance, are based on 1951, and New .Zealand’s on 1952. ‘The report showed that Australia’s rate of mortality for every 100.000 inhabitants was 24.4, compared with New Zealand’s-13.1. People between 15 and 24 years of age were the principal victims, comprising 45.5 per cent, of Australia’s over-all figure and 27.2 per cent, of New Zealand’s over-all figure The next most vulnerable group ■were children under five years of age. The report showed that in some countries transport accidents—7o per cent, of them on the roads —ranked with tuberculosis as the biggest cause of deaths.
Among forms of transport motorvehicles and motor-cycles were by far the biggest killers.
