FLOWER SHOW AT ADDINGTON
WORKSHOPS SOCIETY’S GOOD DISPLAY
A fountain in the midst of banks of flowers made the Addington Workshops Social Hall on Saturday one of the coolest places in Christchurch—and certainly one of the most colourful. The ! occasion was the workshops Horticultural Society’s annual summer show —the tenth , since the society was founded. Dahlias, carnations, gladioli, roses, chrysanthemums, sand trays, and boxes of flowers and fruit filled the hall in bank upon bank. There were 950 entries, and literally thousands of blooms. The considerable vegetable section also was not lacking in colour. The whiteness of potatoes contrasted with the dark greens of marrows and melons and the purple of beet. Warmth was added by the ruddy shades of hundreds of apples. One of the most pleasing of all sections was that for sand trays. Exhibitors, many of them children, had obviously spent hours in tracing with tiny flowers intricate designs within the confines of small saucers. The novelty container section produced minute creations as well. Shells, some of them less than an inch in diameter, tiny porcelain vases, scoopedout vegetables, and a pencil holder, all held flashes of bright colour and careful design. The number and quality of the entries were in themselves surprising. With an unkind season behind them, exhibitors could be excused for taking considerable pride in their entries. Few .would guess from an inspection of the show that Canterbury had not been favoured with one of its best seasons.
