BY-ELECTION IN BRITAIN

GOVERNMENT RETAINS SEAT (Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, February 12. The Government retained the seat in the Harwich (Essex) by-election. The result, announced today, was: Julianßidsdale (Conservative-Liberal), 19,532 votes; Miss Shirley Catlin (Labour), 13,535. The Conservative majority was 5997. The by-election was caused by the elevation to a peerage of Sir Stanley Holmes, who won the seat for the Government at the 1951 General Election with a majority of 7925.
