CAMPERS LOSE CAR AND CARAVAN

(New Zealand Press Association) NELSON, February 3. and Mrs H. W. Gallagher, the oroprietors of the Black Horse Hotel, Wakapuaka. eight miles from Nelson, tt-ere marooned in a tree near the Maori Pa, Wakapuaka. at 4.30 o’clock this morning when the Happy Valley stream, by which they were camping, rose suddenly and swept their car and caravan away. A neighbour who went to see how they were getting on this morning could see no sign of the car and caravan, but heard Mr Gallagher calling from a tree. With the assistance of the police Mr and Mrs Gallagher were rescued. Mr Gallagher w’oke up and discovered that the floor of the caravan was awash, and they were surrounded by rapidly-rising flood waters. They immediately climbed to the top of the caravan but as the onrush of water threatened it they hurried through water up to their armpits to a nearby tawa tree. They had no sooner reached it than the water swept the caravan downstream and a few minutes later carried the car away.
