PROTEST OVER RESULT OF FOURTH RACE (New Zealand Press Association)

TAURANGA, January 12. Although J. Gilpin, of Bay of Plenty, was first home in the fourth race of the Tanner Cup series on Tauranga harbour this afternoon, his placing is subject to the decision of the committee o® a protest from Auckland. If Gilpin’s win is confirmed it will be his fourth straight win in this contest—a record unequalled in the annals of the contest.

The third race was taken from the reigning champion this morning when M. Sellwood, of Canterbury, sailed a better tactical battle, to get home by half a minute from the Bay of Plenty yacht, with Wellington. Otago, Nelson, Waikato, and Taranaki following. Results were:—

Third Race.—Canterbury (Jenny, M. Sellwood) 1; Bay of Plenty (Charm, J. Gilpin) 2: Wellington (Dove, R. Sanders) 3; Otago (Gamble, H. Brown) 4; Nelson (Rata, B. McKenzie) 5; Waikato (Arrow Junior, Judy Woodhouse) 6. Taranaki was disqualified, and West Coast, Auckland, and Poverty .Bay retired. Points at this stage were:—Bay of Plenty 285.20, Canterburv 208.53, Nelson 168,53. Otago 101.86. Wellington 97,42, Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bav 83.30, Waikato 70 27, Taranaki 56.91, Auckland 51.95, West Coast 44.33. Results and points were not available tonight.
