TRACK WORK AT ADDINGTON

PLEASING EFFORT BY FLAGSHIP

CANDIDATE FOR ROYAL MEETING

A fine trial by Flagship was the feature of track work at Addington yesterday morning. Other useful efforts were recorded by Excelsa, Star Rosa, Sally Walla and Fair Isle. Conditions were ideal and most of the work was done about 10 feet out from the rails.

Flagship recorded 4min 34 3-ssec in his run over two miles. He raced at least 10 sulky widths out from the rails on easy going, and his time in the circumstances was ' better than average. The Gold Bar pacer recorded Imin 7 l-ssec for his last half-mile and 34 2-ssec for his last quarter. Flagship looks greatly improved as a result of his race on the second day of the recent Canterbury Park meeting, and he will be very fit for his engagement at the Royal meeting next week. He is off the front in the Newall Handicap, which will be run over one mile and a half. If he is allowed to make his own rules out in front, he will be hard to beat. There are few better front runners in training than Flagship. Excelsa, which has had an easy time since the New Zealand Trotting Cup meeting, looked particularly well after her run over one mile and a half in company with the maiden, Zulu’s Pridp. They recorded 3min 22 3-ss6c, the last half-mile in Imin 2 4-ssec and the last quarter in 30sec. Excelsa looks in great heart for her immediate engagements and she should not be long winning again. It was also a smart effort on the Zulu’s Pride, a candidate for the Second Fairview Handicap at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. Zulu’s Pride has had only one start to date, and if he continue , to improve he may not be long gaining his first win. He is a member of L. O. Thomas’s team.

Star Rosa’s Trial Star Rosa finished under a good hold alongside Trixie Milne at the end of two niiles in 4min 35 l-ssec, the final halfoi 1 o= n lmin 6sec and the last quarter in 31 3-ssec. Star Rosa put plenty of dash into her work, and she will have bright prospects of extending her record at Addington next week. Trixie Milne ran her best race for the season when she finished on for second behind Denbry in the Au Revolt Handicap at Addington on January 2. She looks improved by that iim. and she may not be long winning for her Halswell owner, Mr W. O, Smith. Indomitable, Sure Charge, and First Victory were all running on at the end of two miles in 4min 36sec. They had very little speed on until the last quarter, run in 32 3-ssec. Sure Charge, which niade the pace, looks more robust than he has for some time. He should benefit from yesterday’s run and looks as though he will be fit for his immediate engagements. ° Maori Home, Fair Isle, and Larnie Scott finished ahead of Sally Walla, which conceded them a start of two seconds, at the end of two miles in 4min 35sec, the last four furlongs in Imin 5 3-ssec and the last quarter in 31 4-ssec. Fair Isle, a dual winner at the recent Canterbury Park meeting, looked sore when she pulled up on the second day of the meeting, but she showed no signs of this after working yesterday. She appears to be at her peak and will have to be respected in the Fergusson Handicap at Addington next week.

Larnie Scott, a three-year-old maiden pacer, finished on very solidly over the last furlong, and his was a smart effort. Sally Walla, which will race at Timaru on Saturday, also pleased. The Bruce Walla mare''has not done very much for some weeks, but she looks very well and should soon win again. Mighty Benny's Sprint Mighty Benny, which appears to have ocne well since being left at Addington after the Canterbury Park meeting, was not at top in his run over one mile and a quarter in 2min 47sec, the last halfmile in Imin 5 l-ssec. He was accompanied by Lady Jane, which looks to have freshened up in the last few weeks. Mighty Benny may measure up to the standard of Canterbury horses when he returns to grass track racing. Stylish Linda, a member of S. A. Edwards’s team. Full Fling, and an unnamed trotter went very quietly in their run over ona mile and a half in 3min 39 3-ssec, the last half-mile in Imin 9 l-ssec. Springston’s Pride was restrained' to keep alongside Cossack Post at the end of one mile and a quarter in 2min 57sec, the last four, furlongs in -imin 7sec and the last quarter In 32sec. Cossack Post looks as though he will need time before he shows form. Mighty Falla was restricted to strong pace work, and he ran his last mile and a quarter under a hold in 2min 49 3-ssec. He went at an even pace throughout and finished full of running. He looks greatly improved as a result of his recent racing. Shirley Dillon, Young Wexford, and Cembala finished together at the end of two miles in 4min 47sec, the last halfmile in about Imin 10sec. Shirley Dillon ran a useful race on the first day of the Timaru meeting last week, and if she improves a little she may not be long winning. Ilndy Lou, a good fourth in the John Hole Memorial Handicap at Washdyke last week, and Duncraig recorded 4min 28 4-ssec for two miles, the opening mile in 2min 19 3-ssec, the last four furlongs in Imin 2 2-ssec and the last quarter in 31 3-ssec. It was a smart effort on the part of both horses, which finished on solidly. Little Slam and Preston Lad finished together at the end of one mile and a half in 3min 37 l-ssec, the last quarter in 32 3-ssec. Preston Lad, a member of E. T. Hubbard’s team, looks a promising type of maiden pacer. Super Hall worked quietly by himself over one mile and a half in 3min 28 2-ssec. the last half-mile in Imin 6sec. H. Greenhorn has him looking well.
