THREE HOURS TO CROSS WAITAKI BRIDGE . (From Our Own Reporter)

WAIMATE, January 12. Traffic across the Waitaki bridge was held up for more than three hours on Sunday morning while a boiler weighing more than 24 tons was transported over the bridge. The boiler, which will be installed in the woollen mills at Oamaru, is 28ft long and more than

A modified tank carrier with a double row of eight wheels was used to bring the boiler from Lyttelton after shipment from London by the Brisbane Star. The double row of wheels caused the delay in crossing the bridge. The wheels occupied almost the full width of the decking, making it necessary to build up the decking to the height of the railway lines. Members of the mill staff, equipped with lengths of planking, had the task of laying planks down and taking them up as the vehicle moved along. A special diesel truck of 120 h.p. pulled the load, but another heavy truck had to assist at two hills at Timaru.

The new boiler is believed to be the largest of its type in the South Island.
